Caribbean Animal Welfare * * * COMING SOON: Updated Website! * * * This Web site contains resources for animal welfare organizations, visitors to the Caribbean, tourism industry representatives, and citizens interested in Caribbean animal welfare. The Caribbean is home to an estimated 40 million people and tens of millions of animals. The Caribbean also hosts more than 22 million visitors by air every year, and more than 5 million cruise ship tourists. Tourism is one of the largest industries in the region, generating more than US$25 billion a year. Stray, injured, sick, and hungry animals can distress visitors while on their vacation. Roaming animals and dog and cat overpopulation are major problems, along with neglect, cruelty, and animal protection laws that remain largely un-enforced. More than 80 animal welfare organizations are working to improve the lives of animals in the Caribbean, by helping animals in need and promoting responsible pet care through humane education. These efforts contribute to improving Caribbean communities for both visitors and residents.
