MISSION
The Pegasus Foundation improves animal welfare through effective grantmaking and education in the United States, the Caribbean, Native American lands and Kenya.
2008 ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND HIGHLIGHTS
Caribbean:
The Pegasus Foundation organized the third Caribbean Animal Welfare Conference, held April 21-24, 2008, at the Hotel Melia in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. A total of 143 people from 28 islands or countries attended the conference. The attendees represented 64 organizations, 52 of which are based in the Caribbean. Twenty workshops on a wide range of animal welfare topics were held over the course of the three-day event. The conference was sponsored by the Pegasus Foundation and 10 other animal welfare organizations and foundations, which contributed a total of $73,000.
The Pegasus Foundation continued its efforts in 2008 to link tourism with animal welfare in the Caribbean through a monthly e-newsletter, Caribbean Animal Tourism Support, which highlights successful partnerships between animal welfare groups and tourism companies.
Pegasus Foundation staff conducted a total of six training and technical assistance visits to Caribbean islands throughout 2008.
Florida:
The Pegasus Foundations Caring Fields Education Center in Palm City, Florida, reached a total of 1,107 people in 2008 through educational workshops. Since the Education Center opened in June 2006, a total of 7,431 children and adults have participated in Caring Fields Education Center programs.
The Pegasus Foundations Caring Fields held a fundraising event in February that raised $40,000 for programs and operations.
The Pegasus Foundation distributed a total of $56,000 in grants to Florida animal welfare groups through the Help Us Help Them Fund.
The Pegasus Foundation helped launch the Treasured Lands Foundation to protect land in Martin County, Florida.
Massachusetts:
The Pegasus Foundation worked with several animal welfare groups on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to increase available feral cat spay/neuter services.
Western United States:
The Pegasus Foundation brought in several funding partners to cover costs for subsidized spay/neuter clinics in the Navajo Nation community of Kayenta, Arizona. Funders included local Kayenta businesses, Best Friends Animal Society, the Foundation for Protection of Animals, and private donors.
As part of ongoing efforts to help the bison of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, the Pegasus Foundation participated in a coalition that obtained federal, state and private funding to protect new land where bison can roam outside Yellowstone Park.
