Manatees - Florida

The manatee, an ancient and rare species of marine mammal, is fast disappearing from its native habitat in Florida's waters as a result of human encroachment. In partnership with many organizations, including the Save the Manatee Club, the Pegasus Foundation has worked to educate policymakers and the public about manatee protection.

In addition to gaining the support of state, regional, and national organizations on this issue, the Foundation organized a coalition of representatives from national non-profit organizations and law firms to sue federal and state agencies for failing to enforce existing manatee protection laws. Lawsuits filed in 2000 were settled a year later, but Pegasus and the coalition continues to closely monitor settlement agreements to ensure manatees are adequately protected.

Buffalo - Montana

The Pegasus Foundation has been working since 1998 to protect the bison of Yellowstone National Park, located in northwest Wyoming on the Montana border. These bison are protected inside the Park. But once outside Yellowstone borders, they can be shot and killed by the Montana Department of Livestock because of a perceived threat of bison spreading brucellosis to cattle.

In addition to working with other organizations on this issue, the Foundation provides funds to the Buffalo Field Campaign, a grassroots organization working in the field to protect the Yellowstone bison.

Stranded Marine Mammals - Massachusetts

In partnership with other environmental organizations, the Pegasus Foundation developed the Cape Cod Stranding Network, Inc., to assist marine mammals stranded on the shores of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and surrounding islands. The Network helps the stranded whales, dolphins, and other animals return to their normal habitats, rehabilitates those that are injured, investigates causes of stranding, and educates the public on how to prevent future incidents.
